S.T.O.P. Welcomes Senator’s Condemnation Of Amazon Ring TV Show

(New York, NY, 8/25/2022) - Today, the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.), a New York-based privacy group, welcomes Senator Ed Markey’s condemnation of “Ring Nation,” a reality TV series using Amazon Ring doorbell surveillance footage. Amazon Ring and its Neighbors surveillance app partner with local law enforcement and encourage vigilantism. The civil rights group condemned “Ring Nation” for normalizing and profiting off biased surveillance and police violence.

“We’re glad to see Senator Markey denounce this ghoulish display,” said Surveillance Technology Oversight Project Executive Director Albert Fox Cahn. “Home surveillance systems fuel suspicion, discrimination, and police violence. We should be outlawing these systems, not putting them on TV. When Americans are having the police called on them simply because of Ring vigilantes, it’s not America’s Funniest Home Videos, it’s America’s most tragic. No matter what spin you put on this surveillance, it’s clear that Amazon is the one that needs to be put under scrutiny, not everyone whose neighbor buys a Ring.”

Last fall, S.T.O.P. released The Spy Next Door, a report detailing the dangers and bias of neighborhood surveillance apps, including Neighbors by Amazon Ring, that encourage users to upload video footage, photos, and descriptions of suspected crimes. Earlier that year, S.T.O.P. called on Amazon to permanently stop law enforcement use of the company’s Rekognition facial recognition system.
