THOMSON REUTERS CORPORATION

Status: Filed

Key issues: Corporate Misconduct, Commercialization of Personal Data, Immigration, ICE, Privacy

Court: U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California

Docket: 4:21-cv-1418

Counsel: S.T.O.P. / Justice Catalyst Law / Gupta Wessler PLLC / Gibbs Law Group

S.T.O.P. and our co-counsel are pursuing litigation against Thomson Reuters for selling data without consent to private companies, police, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Our plaintiffs, both Oakland-based, include Cat Brooks, a prominent community organizer, anti-racist activist, playwright, and poet; and Rasheed Shabazz, an urban planning historian, youth development professional, and author of Oakland Voices, a community news and storytelling program.

The lawsuit was originally filed in California Superior Court on December 3rd, 2020, but the case was only made public after the lawsuit was removed to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California last week. The putative class action lawsuit seeks damages for the millions of Californians whose data is sold by Thomson Reuters without consent, alleging violation of California’s Common Law Right to Publicity and Unfair Competition Law.
