Friend,
With inauguration day less than two weeks away, we’re gearing up to fight back against the incoming Trump administration’s cruel plans to deport millions of immigrants, slash already-limited abortion access, and roll back civil rights. Last month, we released two reports that are essential to understanding how surveillance can expedite Trump’s far-right agenda—and what states like New York must do to stop it.
Deportation Data Centers: How Fusion Centers Circumvent Sanctuary City Laws
There is no such thing as a sanctuary city in a surveillance state. In this report, S.T.O.P. details how a nationwide network of DHS-backed fusion centers drives deportations by enabling ICE to coopt local police resources, circumventing local sanctuary laws. On the local level, cities and states have the power to opt out of fusion centers and must do so immediately to undermine Trump’s mass deportation plans.
Unintended Traps: Recordkeeping Requirements that Endanger Abortion Access
In this report, S.T.O.P. shows how medical and financial recordkeeping requirements endanger abortion providers and funders, even in states with strong abortion shield laws. S.T.O.P. anonymously interviewed individuals who extend abortion access to residents of states that ban and restrict abortion, including telemedicine abortion providers (“shield clinics”), abortion funders, and experts who advise these service providers. The report comes shortly after Texas mounted the first effort to enforce a state abortion ban beyond state lines, suing a New York doctor for prescribing abortion pills to a patient near Dallas.
President-elect Trump’s return poses a daunting threat to our civil rights—even to basic human rights. But from cutting ties with fusion centers to bolstering abortion shield laws, there are actions we can take on the state and local level to safeguard our rights. Read and share S.T.O.P.’s reports to learn more.
