Advocates Protest Facial Recognition At Citi Field

WHO: Fight For The Future, Encode Justice New York Chapter, Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.)

WHAT: Event to protest facial recognition ticketing at Citi Field Stadium in New York. The event will include speakers, signs, banners, flyers, and related messages. Representatives of Fight for the Future and S.T.O.P. will be available for in-person interviews.

Participants will also deliver a letter signed by rights organizations opposing all uses of facial recognition within major league sports, including Amnesty International, STOP, and Access Now.

WHERE: 36-2 Seaver Wy, Flushing, New York, 11389.

WHEN: Wednesday, August 21, 12-1:30pm EST

WHY: Back in 2021, Citi Field was one of the first stadiums in the country to introduce dangerous facial recognition ticketing for baseball fans, and now this tech is spreading to other stadiums across the country through a program called “Go-Ahead Entry”. The system uses AI-powered tech to scan people’s faces and identify them as they walk into the arena. Not only is it creepy, but the potential for abuse of the data collected through facial recognition tools is also endless –– from data sharing with police departments, to hackers stealing people’s identities, to manipulative and invasive advertising. Just last summer, news surfaced of Brazilian police using facial recognition data from a sports stadium’s ticketing system to identify and track down suspects of crimes, and it’s simply a matter of time before we see similar police use and abuse of the data collected through facial recognition ticketing kiosks in the US.

Advocates hope to put an end to facial recognition ticketing and other biometric data collection at stadiums, and will be organizing a series of protest events outside stadiums across the country over the next few weeks. New York advocates organizing Wednesday's event at Citi Field also call on the New York City Council to pass two bills banning use of facial recognition and other biometric surveillance by public accommodations, including arenas and stadiums, and by landlords in residential buildings.
