S.T.O.P. Condemns Adams’ Plan For Subway Metal Detectors In ‘Next Few Days’
(New York, NY, 7/17/2024) - Today, the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.), a New York-based privacy and civil rights group, condemns Mayor Eric Adams’ announcement that he will launch the scandal-plagued gun detection vendor Evolv in the New York City Subway in the "next few days." Evolv has faced growing scrutiny and litigation over the past year, including investigations from the Federal Trade Commission, Securities and Exchange Commission, and a New York student who claims he was injured by an attacker whose weapon went undetected by an Evolv scanner. The civil rights group warned that the launch of the error-prone technology will dramatically slow-down entry to the subway system and pose potential crowd control concerns.

“This is yet another misguided PR stunt that will anger New Yorkers,” said Surveillance Technology Oversight Project Executive Director Albert Fox Cahn. “If the mayor thinks his approval rating is low now, just wait until people start missing the train because of a metal detector mistake. Turning turnstiles into TSA checkpoints is ludicrous. The biggest dangers on the subway often come from precarious platforms, not guns or knives.”
