S.T.O.P. Condemns NYC Board of Elections’ Failure To Protect Voter Privacy
(New York, NY, 9/21/2021) - Today, the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.), a New York-based civil rights group, condemns the New York City Board of Elections’ (BOE) failure to protect voters’ privacy in the June 2021 primary election. Princeton University’s Electoral Innovation Lab identified 378 New Yorkers, including Mayor de Blasio’s son Dante de Blasio, whose ballots could be identified because they were the only voter in a single precinct.

“When the BOE can’t even protect the secret ballot, they can’t be trusted with our data,” said Surveillance Technology Oversight Project Executive Director Albert Fox Cahn. “This isn’t the first time the BOE has failed New York voters and it won’t be the last unless we act. The BOE needs not just to protect our ballot, but to protect all voter registration data.”
In March 2019, S.T.O.P. condemned the BOE’s disclosure of New York voter registration information on its public website, including names, addresses, and party affiliation. That April, the civil rights group filed a FOIL request demanding the BOE share information on the number of downloads from the “data dump.”
