We Revealed NYC’s Student DragnetThe new OMNY database puts countless families at risk.
Friend,
We often respond to the news here at S.T.O.P., but it’s a big day when we break news. That’s why we wanted to make sure you saw our work last week to uncover the MTA and Department of Education’s scheme to track hundreds of thousands of NYC school children.
Working with public school parents, we proved that city officials track student OMNY cards, creating a dangerous new student database. Concocted in apparent response to a handful of students selling their OMNY cards online, the new OMNY database puts countless families at risk. The risk is gravest for undocumented families, with our supposed sanctuary city putting school children on the express train to deportation.
Not only is this database a privacy nightmare: the system is likely to falsely accuse the most vulnerable students. Students whose travel patterns change because of eviction or violence in the home suddenly could lose their transit lifeline, just as they need it most.
We refuse to accept the surveillance status quo, so we’re ramping up our fight for the OMNY Privacy Act and Modernize the PPPL Act, outlawing this sort of transit tracking and banning most access by police and ICE. Please support this campaign by calling your state assembly member and senator if you live in New York, and consider supporting S.T.O.P.’s fight for safe and private transit wherever you may be.
