S.T.O.P. Condemns NYPD Shooting On Subway

(New York, NY, 9/17/2024) - Today, the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.), a New York-based privacy and civil rights group, condemns NYPD for shooting four people at a Brooklyn subway station Sunday over one rider’s alleged evasion of the $2.90 fare. NYPD opened fire at the Sutter Avenue L train station in Brownsville, a predominantly Black neighborhood, injuring three civilians and one of their own officers, including one bystander who was shot in the head. NYPD has attempted to justify the shooting because the fare evasion suspect was wielding a knife. The civil rights group condemned the incident as horrific, excessive use of force that underscores the danger of NYPD’s increased presence on the subway and harsh enforcement of fare payment.

“NYPD’s increased presence and surveillance of the subway does not keep New Yorkers safe,” said Surveillance Technology Oversight Project Communications Director Will Owen. “In fact, this despicable act of violence shows how much it endangers New Yorkers, especially in predominantly Black neighborhoods like Brownsville. NYPD chose to escalate this situation and respond with disproportionate force. They made it abundantly clear they were there to protect $2.90, not the physical safety of transit riders on the L train.”

Last year, S.T.O.P. revealed the MTA contracts with the artificial intelligence surveillance firm Awaait to monitor subway fare evasion. The previously unreported contract, which S.T.O.P. obtained under New York’s Freedom of Information Law, uses the MTA’s sprawling network of cameras and Awaait’s AI software to measure alleged fare evasion across the transit system.
