Friend,
This past Wednesday, President Biden signed a law that will ban TikTok if the app’s parent company ByteDance does not sell its U.S. operations within a year. The move is as careless as it sounds.
TikTok is not a perfect app. It is highly addictive by design, and harvests our data for whatever purpose will increase the company’s bottom line. But the same story can be written about Meta and other social media companies, and Facebook is certainly no stranger to being hacked.
If President Biden wants to protect Americans’ data, he can start by enacting regulations which do just that. Our personal data is still at risk in every other corner of the internet. Banning TikTok is nativist alarmism, not an honest attempt to protect Americans. Not to mention, erasing a social media giant further concentrates a market for online speech that is already dominated by just a few firms.
The government should certainly be working to protect our data. Unfortunately, banning TikTok just isn’t that.
