S.T.O.P. Condemns Adams For Proposing Scandal-Plagued Gun Tech Vendor In Subway
(New York, NY, 3/28/2024) - Today, the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.), a New York-based privacy and civil rights group, condemns Mayor Eric Adams for proposing deployment of the scandal-plagued gun technology vendor Evolv in the New York City Subway. Evolv has faced growing scrutiny and litigation in recent months, including investigations from the Federal Trade Commission, Securities and Exchange Commission, and a New York student who claims he was injured by an attacker whose weapon went undetected by an Evolv scanner. The civil rights group warned that deployment of the error-prone technologies will dramatically slow-down entry to the subway system and pose potential crowd control concerns.

“The technology is guaranteed to slow down your commute, but it can’t keep you safe,” said Surveillance Technology Oversight Project Executive Director Albert Fox Cahn. “Why is New York thinking about doing business with this sort of scandal-plagued company? A quick google search would have shown the Mayor that Evolv is already under federal investigation and being sued by its own shareholders for fraud. This is yet another example of the Mayor’s surveillance playbook, turning to high-tech gimmicks instead of real solutions. We need to invest in solutions that actually keep New Yorkers safe, not more discredited tech vendors.”
Last week, the civil rights group condemned NYPD’s plan for “pushing the envelope” on surveillance technology and welcomed New York City Council members’ scrutiny of such spending. The remarks came at a budget hearing of the New York City Council Committee on Public Safety, where Department representatives defended surveillance technology like drones and the Domain Awareness System, the opaque surveillance system that collects tens of thousands of camera feeds and other databases from around the city. In 2022, S.T.O.P. condemned Eric Adams’ proposed use of gun detection software as part of his Blueprint to End Gun Violence.
