Friend,
Whether you called it Robocop or “a trash can on wheels,” NYPD’s K5 surveillance robot won’t be recording you on the subway platform any time soon. K5 was cast to storage after its Times Square trial program ended, marking another unremarkable deployment of one of Mayor Adams’ dystopian droids—whose effectiveness is only backed by fantasy.
Cameras don’t stop crime, and NYC taxpayers should never have to see their money taunt them through a camera lens. But at the very least, they should know before it happens and have a chance to voice their concerns. As S.T.O.P. continues to fight against the use of surveillance technologies in our city, NYPD must comply with the Public Oversight of Surveillance Technology (POST) Act—not because it is right, but because it is law.
The possibility of a return from K5 is still open, but in the meantime any reclamation of privacy is a win for New Yorkers. We’ll keep fighting so that Mayor Adams will finally prioritize safety over surveillance.
