Thanksgiving Newsletter 2024

Thanks To You
Friend,

Now more than ever it’s important that we take the time to celebrate our wins and be in community with each other. We want to sincerely thank you for your support this past year, we couldn’t have done it without you.

With your help, S.T.O.P. continued existing advocacy and litigation efforts, and kicked off new projects. We won a class action lawsuit against the NYPD for forcing suspects to remove their hijab and other religious attire for mugshots, leading to a $17.5M settlement. We released 5 research projects, covering topics from the NYPD’s rogue DNA database to surveillance of LGBTQ+ youth. Next, in partnership with the Center for Urban Pedagogy and the Youth Design Center we developed the "Unfriend the NYPD" video series. We published 20+ op-eds that have been featured in major publications such as The Atlantic and local news including City Limits.

Alongside 30 New York transparency advocates, we rallied in support of strengthening New York’s Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) and advocated for 4 bills that bolster open records and transparency. We launched "Empire State AI Accountability", a legislative campaign to protect New Yorkers from the discriminatory impact of artificial intelligence. Finally, our Ban the Scan coalition got a new website, held a rally calling on NYC and State to ban facial recognition, and celebrated New York State passing a provision in the budget banning the use of facial recognition for fare enforcement.

We are hopeful and excited to keep fighting for civil rights in the new year. Whether you donated, attended our events, shared our work, or volunteered with us, we’re so grateful for your support. We hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving in community!

In solidarity,
Team S.T.O.P.
