S.T.O.P. Condemns Tisch NYPD Appointment

(New York, NY, 11/20/2024) - Today, the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.), a New York-based privacy and civil rights group, condemns Mayor Adams’ appointment of Jessica Tisch to be New York City’s next police commissioner. Ms. Tisch currently serves as sanitation commissioner, but began her career working for the NYPD, building some of the city’s most controversial surveillance programs. In particular, Ms. Tisch worked on the city’s Domain Awareness System, connecting tens of thousands of cameras and countless police databases into a single intelligence command center. Additionally, she worked to give every single officer nearly unfettered access to this system through their smartphones, with seemingly no protections against misuse of the system for non-police purposes.

“For a mayor marred by scandal, indictment, and blatant nepotism, this may stand as one of the worst appointments yet,” said Surveillance Technology Oversight Project Executive Director Albert Fox Cahn.  “Tisch built her career on building discriminatory surveillance systems across New York, systematically weaponizing technology against our most vulnerable communities. This appointment would be a nightmare under any circumstances, but it’s particularly alarming for undocumented New Yorkers at the dawn of a new Trump Administration.”

The civil rights group previously condemned Tisch's promotion of surveillance technology in her current role as commissioner of the New York City Department of Sanitation, including cameras on street sweepers, public litter baskets, and to track illegal dumping.
