S.T.O.P. Condemns Evolv Sales Misconduct
(New York, NY, 10/30/2024) - Today, the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.), a New York-based privacy and civil rights group, condemns Evolv, the scandal-plagued metal detector startup Mayor Eric Adams piloted on the New York City Subway, for staff misconduct during business sales. Reporting from the New York Daily News shared that Evolv disclosed that several employees withheld “extracontractual” information about sales with one of the firm’s “largest channel partners.” Evolv’s statement comes several weeks after the Department of Investigation (DOI) launched a probe into the Adams administration’s contracts with Evolv.

“There’s nothing very evolved about these sorts of scandals,” said Surveillance Technology Oversight Project Executive Director Albert Fox Cahn. “These revelations only add suspicion about why our scandal-plagued mayor would do business with an even more scandal-plagued vendor. This technology was never fit for purpose, and it’s clear that New Yorkers are picking up the tab.”
Last week, NYPD shared that its monthlong pilot of Evolv on the subway recovered zero guns and triggered 118 false positives. S.T.O.P. condemned the pilot program as a resounding failure.
Cahn continued, “This is nothing more than a high-tech stop-and-frisk. This sort of AI only puts a digital veneer over the worst sort of NYPD abuses.”
