It’s Time To Ban Spyware

*|MC:SUBJECT|*

Friend,

We may not be shocked by the news that the federal government secretly contracted with the notorious spyware firm “NSO Group,” but we’re angry. Especially because the contract violates President Biden’s executive order against doing business with foreign surveillance firms. This kind of blatant betrayal of the public’s trust is nothing new – especially with spyware and surveillance.

This sort of secrecy and lawlessness are why we must fight for transparency, accountability, and abolition. As these secret contracts show, when government agencies feel free to violate the laws they’re supposed to uphold, it not only undermines civil rights, but the rule of law and democracy itself. Since our founding, S.T.O.P. has not only campaigned to reveal novel surveillance technologies and their impact, but to abolish them.

From geofencing to Pegasus, we fight for bans on surveillance technologies and the threat they pose. But these revelations show just what we’re up against.  Support from community members like you has helped grow our movement into the force we are today, but when government agencies are willing to treat executive orders as optional and ignore laws at every level of government, you can start to imagine what we’re up against. Please consider making a donation today to empower us to meet this moment.

In solidarity,
