Electeds, Advocates Rally Against NYPD Surveillance Violations Before City Council Hearing
(NEW YORK, NY, 12/15/2023) – Today at 12 PM EST the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.), The Legal Aid Society, New York City Council Member Tiffany Cabán, Brennan Center for Justice, New York City Council Member Amanda Farías, The Policing & Social Justice Project, New York City Council Member Jennifer Gutiérrez, Warriors in the Garden, NYU Law Rights over Tech, The Policing Project, and the Center on Race, Inequality, and the Law at NYU Law will hold a press conference and rally condemning the NYPD’s repeated violations of the Public Oversight of Surveillance Technology (POST) Act, which requires the NYPD to disclose its surveillance technologies. The event will be held ahead of a hearing by the City Council’s Committees on Technology and Public Safety, where advocates will highlight the department’s systematic violation of the law. The hearing has been postponed three times already on account of the NYPD.
