Our 2023 J-Term Intern
Gabriella Papper
Civil Rights Intern

Gabriella is a 3L at Harvard Law School from New York City. She is interested in cybersecurity and the intersection of privacy and new technologies. Our Spring 2023 Intern Class
Andrew West
Research Intern

Andrew is a sophomore at Yale University where he is pursuing a BS in Statistics and Data Science. His interests range from spatial data science to law and technology, and he is especially passionate about data ethics, privacy, and the 'tech for good' movement. To these ends, Andrew is research assistant with Yale School of the Environment supporting ongoing work using AI to investigate how urbanization interacts with climate risks, as well as a student fellow with Yale Law School's Information Society Project (ISP) and an analyst with the Yale Undergraduate Consulting Group. Originally from rural New Mexico, Andrew is a lifelong skier and avid lover of the outdoors.
Anushka Sikdar
Legal Intern

Anushka Sikdar is a law student at the Emory University School of Law, hoping to practice general litigation after graduation. Prior to law school, she graduated from the University of California, at Santa Barbara, with a degree in Political Science. She is passionate about the rights to privacy in the digital age and has experience working on invasion of privacy issues in addition to personal experience with mass surveillance problems. As a research intern for S.T.O.P. this spring, Anushka is excited to learn more about mass surveillance issues in this age and help fight for privacy rights.
Austen Fisher
Legal Intern

Austen Fisher is in his second year at Brooklyn Law school. He is an active member of the National Lawyers Guild, a group dedicated to leftist lawyering, as well as Brooklyn Law Students for the Public Interest. Before law school, Austen was a professional actor, comedian, and musician.
Avery Freeman
Advocacy Intern

Avery is currently a student in the MA in Bioethics & Science Policy program at Duke University. As a part of the program, Avery looks forward to further exploring questions pertaining to tech ethics through an interdisciplinary and intersectional lens. She hopes to use this internship as a steppingstone towards working to craft equitable policies that protect and support the most vulnerable and underserved members of our society.
Derek Smith
Civil Rights Intern

Derek Smith is a 2L at CUNY School of Law. His specific interests in law are the historical and contemporary ways in which the state surveils, incarcerates, and harasses oppressed groups and movement organizers. He believes that the law itself will not liberate us, but that it can be used a tool in our collective struggle. While in law school, Derek has advocated for teacher’s assistants to get paid, the creation of a Federal Indian Law clinic, and is on the board of the LGBTQ+ student association, OUTLaws. In his free time, he loves a well-produced podcast and sharpening his Muay Thai skills.
Elizabeth Huang
Civil Rights Intern

Liz is a junior at Wellesley College in Massachusetts, currently pursuing a double major in Political Science and Philosophy. She is interested in exploring the intersection of digital and criminal justice, from the erosion of privacy in domestic surveillance to “feedback loops” created by predictive policing algorithms. At Wellesley, Liz is the Political Engagement Chair for College Government, a Research Assistant in the Philosophy department, and a student leader in disability and transformative justice activism. Liz has previously interned with the New York City Civil Court system, PEN America, and on a federal whistleblower case. She looks forward to working with S.T.O.P. as a Civil Rights Intern to combat technological abuse in profiling, policing, and punishment.

Julie Lee
Research Intern

Julie is a postdoctoral researcher at NYU, with a PhD in Neuroscience from University College London, and a BSc in Psychology from the University of Bristol. She spends her spare time doing labor organizing and playing ice hockey in various leagues around NYC. Her interests are in racial justice, tech justice, radical mental health, and their intersections. She is excited to use her research and tech skills towards shining a light on the harms of surveillance and other technologies on marginalized communities.
Yasmin Elmasry
Legal Intern

Yasmin Elmasry is currently an undergraduate student at Johns Hopkins University studying Public Health and Bioethics. She is prelaw and has worked in the past with Civil Rights and Immigration legal groups including the Immigrant Justice Corps and the Council on American Islamic Relations in their National Branch. She hopes to apply to law school within the next year and in the meantime, gain valuable insight into as many legal fields as possible, including the emerging field of surveillance and technology litigation.
It's remarkable just how much S.T.O.P. has expanded these past four years. With your support, S.T.O.P. will continue to grow into the organization we need to dismantle mass surveillance.

In solidarity,
Team S.T.O.P.
