S.T.O.P. Condemns DOD, FBI Buying 90% Of Internet Data

(New York, NY, 9/21/2022) – Today, the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.), a New York-based privacy and civil rights group, condemns revelations that the U.S. Department of Defense and FBI have purchased access to Augury, an internet monitoring tool that claims to surveil 90% of the world’s internet traffic data. Today, Motherboard reported that government and corporate clients can use the tool to access sweeping bundles of email, browsing, contracting, internet cookie, and other sensitive data.

"The FBI and military aren't just buying the world's internet traffic, they're selling out the Constitution,” said Surveillance Technology Oversight Project Executive Director Albert Fox Cahn. “This sort of spying simply isn't compatible with a democracy. These tools highlight the courts' failure to keep up with the threat of modern surveillance. There's no reason why police and the military should have an easier time buying our data than getting it through a court order. It's long past time for both Congress and the Biden Administration to act."

In a congressional letter released today, Senator Ron Wyden condemned the Naval Criminal Investigative Service for warrantless purchase and use of Augury data. Last week, S.T.O.P. welcomed another letter from Wyden and fellow Democratic senator Ed Markey calling on Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to end its use of facial recognition. That same week, S.T.O.P. also condemned revelations of a secret U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) cellphone and computer database that includes data from up to 10,000 devices per year.
