Friend,
It’s now been over two years since NYPD’s brutality against Black Lives Matter protesters made headlines around the world. But while the Department’s physical attacks received international condemnation, its unprecedented levels of anti-protest surveillance went unseen. Until now.
Last summer, S.T.O.P. joined Amnesty International, one of the world’s leading human rights organizations, in taking the NYPD to court to demand they show us their records on facial recognition and other spy tools that targeted BLM protesters. And last week, we won. A New York Supreme Court judge has ordered NYPD to hand over up to 2,700 documents related to its use of surveillance technology on BLM protesters, after years of the Department evading the law.
New Yorkers have a right to know how they are being surveilled while exercising their First Amendment freedoms. NYPD’s refusal to share these records shows just how much contempt the Department has for civilian oversight. But now that we’ve won, we’ll harness the records to outlaw facial recognition and other abusive surveillance technologies once and for all.
We want to thank our partners at Amnesty International and supporters like you for helping us get one step closer to banning facial recognition in New York. Join our Ban The Scan petition today to help make our city a place where everyone can speak out against injustice without being tracked.
