Upcoming S.T.O.P. Events!

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
Friend,

After a long winter, we can't wait to kick off Anti-Surveillance Spring with a slew of exciting S.T.O.P. events this April. We’re hosting and joining panels on topics ranging from dystopian municipal tech to the civil rights impact of AI:
Keep IDNYC Safe: Dangers of the Proposed IDNYC Expansion
Monday, April 4, 2-3 PM ET

Cosponsored with the Information Society Project at Yale Law School and the Information Law Institute at the NYU School of Law, this panel explores NYC Mayor Eric Adams’ proposed expansion of municipal data collection and digitization of city services, and the danger that this plan poses to undocumented New Yorkers. The current municipal ID, IDNYC, is a lifeline for undocumented communities, especially with photo ID needed to access increasing numbers of public spaces. But Mayor Adams’ plan could put these communities at risk.

Panelists include Natalia Aristizabal Betancur (Make the Road NY), Deyanira Del Río (New Economy Project), Alli Finn (Immigrant Defense Project), and Albert Fox Cahn (S.T.O.P.). Moderated by Eleni Manis (S.T.O.P.).

RadTech x Amnesty: Facial Recognition in the 5 Boroughs
Tuesday, April 19, 3-4 PM ET

In this session, S.T.O.P. and Amnesty International will discuss New York City’s sprawling network of surveillance cameras with facial recognition technology. Using publicly available data from Amnesty’s Decode NYC Surveillance initiative and S.T.O.P.’s 2021 Surveillance Census, the interactive panel will feature demonstrations of both organizations’ public and private surveillance camera mapping projects. S.T.O.P. and Amnesty will also discuss the racial biases and inaccuracy of facial recognition software and the growing national movement against its use.

Panelists include S.T.O.P.'s Albert Fox Cahn and Sophie Dyer, Tactical Research Adviser at Amnesty International's Crisis Evidence Lab.
AI in RegTech Summit - Automated Injustice: Civil Rights & AI
Friday, April 22, 11:50 AM

Hosted by Rework, the AI In RegTech Summit is a chance to discover how AI & machine learning are impacting regulatory processes from leading innovations across industry, research and regulatory bodies. This session with S.T.O.P.'s Albert Fox Cahn will analyze emerging concerns about the civil rights impact of AI systems as well as the legislative and regulatory efforts being taken to curb bias, protect privacy, and strengthen civil rights protections.
We can’t wait to see you at one (or all!) of these discussions soon. For more information on events at S.T.O.P. this spring, click here.
