S.T.O.P. Condemns NYPD Plan To Join Amazon Ring’s ‘Neighbors’
(New York, NY 11/2/22) – Today, the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.), a New York-based privacy and civil rights group, condemns the NYPD’s announcement that it will join Amazon Ring’s Neighbors App. The group warned that such a public-private surveillance partnership would promote vigilantism, racial profiling, and police violence.

“The NYPD has never been a good neighbor to most New Yorkers, and this move will only put more people at risk,” said Surveillance Technology Oversight Project Executive Director Albert Fox Cahn. “This technology isn’t keeping people safe, it’s getting neighbors shot, as we tragically saw last week in Florida. This sort of crowdsourced surveillance will only lead to more wrongful arrests, racial profiling, and police violence. Most New Yorkers would second guess installing these home surveillance tools if they understood how easily these systems could be used against them and their families by police.”
Last week, S.T.O.P. demanded Amazon halt the sale of Ring surveillance doorbells after a man and his teenage son in Florida allegedly shot at a woman in her car seven times after receiving a Ring alert when she dropped off a package sent to the wrong address. Last fall, S.T.O.P. released The Spy Next Door, a report detailing the dangers and bias of neighborhood surveillance apps, including Neighbors, that encourage users to upload video footage, photos, and descriptions of suspected crimes.
