Friend,
The Board of Elections failed New York voters once again, putting our information at risk. Only this time, they managed to undermine one of the cornerstones of democracy: the secret ballot. This week, researchers revealed the votes of hundreds of New Yorkers, including Mayor de Blasio’s son Dante.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the BOE fail to safeguard New Yorkers’ data. In 2019, we condemned the BOE for making every single New Yorker’s voter registration information available on a public, insecure website. This data dump includes millions of people’s names, addresses, and party affiliations.
But while the BOE is quick to share our data, they aren’t as eager to have us see theirs. When demanded to know how many New Yorkers’ data had been downloaded, as we’re entitled to under law, the BOE simply refused.
At a time when our federal democracy is facing historic threats across the country, our local election officials need to do much better here at home. The BOE must preserve the secret ballot, they must remove our public voter records, and they must ensure that New Yorkers are no longer forced to pay a privacy poll tax for simply casting their vote.
