Friend,
Every day, New Yorkers face the consequences of the NYPD’s racist so-called “gang database,” separated from their families through incarceration or deportation because of constant surveillance which lands them on a secret list they never see. This database of Black and Latinx New Yorkers is digital stop-and-frisk, targeting communities of color for nothing more than what they wear and where they live.
On Tuesday, S.T.O.P. and fellow members of Grassroots Advocates for Neighborhood Groups & Solutions rallied for the NYPD’s Inspector General release a report on this dangerous database. This is just the first step in our coalition’s broader push to erase the database and end racist gang policing in NYC.
And our voices could not be ignored. Hours later, the Inspector General confirmed their office would soon release a report more than three years in the making! This report will highlight many of the NYPD’s secretive abuses, further fueling our fight. What we already know is that this sort of social affiliation surveillance only facilitates police violence and the criminalization of Black and Brown New Yorkers.

We also know that community organizing works, and we’ll continue to fight until this database is fully erased. We appreciate your support every step of the way.
In solidarity,
