S.T.O.P.’s work has been growing rapidly in recent months, as we take on more surveillance fights than ever before. But as our work expands, our staff needs to grow too, and that’s why we’re excited to introduce our largest intern class ever! Our incredible cohort were selected from hundreds of applicants from all around the world. Together, we know we’ll do amazing work to protect privacy and defend civil rights.
Our Summer 2021 Intern Class
Ava Levine
Community Outreach & Communications Intern

Ava Levine is a junior at Johns Hopkins University majoring in International Studies and Economics. She has experience working with different community-based organizations in NYC, and is passionate about the intersection between technology and America’s carceral state.
Becky Jaye
Community Outreach Intern

Becky Jaye is a rising fifth-year rabbinical student at Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion in New York. She studied for her B.A. in American Studies at Yale College and thereafter completed a two-year fellowship in Zhuhai, China for the Yale-China Association.
Dana Levy
Communications Intern

Dana Levy is a rising senior at Tulane University studying Political Science and Psychology. Prior to joining S.T.O.P.’s Communications team, she interned at The Legal Aid Society and, more recently, at the Law Offices of Joseph A. Bondy where she retained roles in research and media coordination. 
Destiny Moreno
Non-Profit Development Intern

Destiny Moreno is a second-year graduate student at the LBJ School of Public Affairs. She is passionate about mitigating harmful technology with interests in criminal and economic justice. Destiny earned her Bachelor of Arts in 2020 in Public Policy with a minor in Science, Technology & Society from the University of California at San Diego.
Jamie Smith
Civil Rights Intern

Jamie Smith is a rising 3L at Cornell Law School where she is an Online Editor for the Journal of Law and Public Policy. During law school, she has worked for Cornell’s First Amendment Clinic and as a research assistant. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in Communications.
Jess I. Valenzuela
Civil Rights Intern

Jess I. Valenzuela (they/she) is a 2L at Harvard Law School. Prior to law school, Jess provided immigration legal services to survivors of violent crimes as a DOJ Accredited Representative in Los Angeles and taught courses at The Claremont Colleges. Jess graduated from Claremont Graduate University with their Ph.D. in Education and a Gender and Women’s Studies Certificate.
Juilee Shivalkar
Civil Rights Intern

Juilee Shivalkar is a rising 3L at New York University School of Law where she serves as an articles selection editor at the NYU Review of Law and Social Change. Born in Mumbai, India, she grew up in Iowa before moving to North Carolina.
Katie Buoymaster
Civil Rights Intern

Katie is a rising 2L at Fordham University School of Law. She grew up in San Francisco, CA and graduated from Williams College in 2015. Before starting law school, Katie spent a year as a Fulbright ETA in Turkey, served as a research assistant at the IAI think tank in Rome, and worked in business development for a Dubai-based startup in the UAE and Lebanon.
Maxwell Votey
Civil Rights Intern

Maxwell Votey is a second-year law student at NYU School of Law. He is a Student Fellow with NYU Law's Privacy Research Group, Chair of the NYU Law School Art Law Society, and Senior Articles Editor for the Journal of International Law and Politics (JILP).
Olenka Ballena
Community Outreach Intern

Olenka Ballena is a rising senior in the Macaulay Honors College at Hunter College, majoring in English Literature and Public Policy, with a minor in Legal Studies. Her experience researching policy areas that directly impact marginalized communities further solidified her passion for addressing the tensions that exist at the intersection of technological innovation and policy.
Olivia Al
Non-Profit Development Intern

Olivia Al is a recent American University graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Finance and a minor in Information Systems and Technology. She previously served as a Programs and Initiatives intern for The National Association of Investment Companies (NAIC).
It's been amazing to see how much S.T.O.P. has grown in such a short amount of time, but we know the fight against mass surveillance is an uphill battle. With your support, we can’t wait to see how much we’ll accomplish this summer.
