Some Weekend Reading

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
Friend,

You know that we write a lot here at S.T.O.P., but the past week was something else. Now, with the long weekend almost here, we want to make sure you can catch up on all of our recent writing.

Last Friday, I wrote in Fast Company that the Biden Administration can’t claim moral leadership abroad unless they help state and local governments tackle America’s surveillance abuses at home.

The same day, Surveillance and the City Co-Host Rashida Richardson and I called on the new administration to provide local governments guidance on A.I. regulation in The Hill.

On Monday, S.T.O.P. Community Advisory Board Member Chris Gilliard and I had a piece in Medium OneZero, saying that the New York Times must not use the same geolocation data in its reporting that it warns is being abused in policing.

A day later, S.T.O.P.’s Research Director Eleni Manis and I wrote in the N.Y. Daily News about the abject failure of New York City’s latest artificial intelligence accountability efforts.

On Wednesday, S.T.O.P. released our latest white paper in partnership with Hogan Lovells, LLP. In New CCOPS On The Block, we detail the performance of local surveillance ordinances in the U.S.

Finally, this morning, S.T.O.P. Technology Advisor Justin Sherman and I wrote in WIRED about the NYPD’s failure to comply with the POST Act, last year’s landmark surveillance law.

None of this work would be possible without the backing from you and other S.T.O.P. supporters. Thank you for helping us reshape the privacy agenda in New York, and around the world.

With thanks,
Albert Fox Cahn, Esq.
Executive Director
