Nov/Dec Upcoming Events

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
Friend,

Halloween may be behind us, but creepy tech is still everywhere. Learn more about all the spyware ghouls and gremlins at S.T.O.P.'s events this month! We’re hosting and joining exciting panels on topics ranging from dystopian worker surveillance to AI ethics:

Smart Cities New York Urban Tech Summit

Wednesday, November 10, 10:30 AM - 12 PM

How should New York City enact rules that govern how City agencies use and share data? What principles should guide them? Speakers include Albert Fox Cahn, Executive Director of S.T.O.P., and Tara Pham, CEO of Numina. Part of the Smart Cities New York Urban Tech Summit hosted by CIV:LAB and Cornell Tech.

S.T.O.P. x RadTech: Worker Surveillance in the Age of COVID

Wednesday, November 10, 6-7 PM

Joined by labor advocates Ryan Gerety and Strea Sanchez (United For Respect) and Frank Kearl (Make The Road NY), we’ll examine the expansion of and resistance against both remote and in-person worker surveillance during the COVID-19 pandemic. What’s new, what’s business as usual, and what can we do to uplift worker-led movements to resist surveillance?

Yale Law School ISP: Impact through Litigation and Legislative Advocacy

Friday, November 12, 11:50 AM - 12:50 PM

While there has been well documented concern about AI decision making systems, there has not been much litigation to date. Class action lawsuits are one mechanism to allow people to seek remedies against harmful public and private practices. This panel will address the challenges of building a case in the AI context, and offer ways to construct strategies that involve both litigation and legislative advocacy.

100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics - The Fight Against Surveillance State

Thursday, December 2, 11:55 AM - 12:35 PM

In this session, speakers Eleni Manis (Research Director, S.T.O.P.) and Jennifer Lee (Technology & Liberty Manager, ACLU of Washington) will share how both S.T.O.P. and the ACLU are fighting harms from the surveillance state - automated decision systems, predictive policing tools, facial recognition systems, and getting agencies to disclose how they are using these pervasive systems.
We can’t wait to see you at one (or all!) of these discussions soon. For more information on events at S.T.O.P., click here.
