NYPD Transparency Is Just The Start!

We’re still celebrating last week’s historic win over the NYPD, passing the first New York City surveillance reforms in decades. But as proud as we are of this milestone, we’re even more excited about what comes next.

The POST Act is crucial because it finally pulls back the curtain on NYPD spying, showing New Yorkers the tools that can invade nearly every element of our lives. This is an indispensable first step since, until we understand the problem, we can’t fix it.

But there are already plenty of tools that we know New York police abuse, and so even before the ink is dry on the POST Act, we’re calling on Albany to amplify City Hall’s work and pass the Privacy N.Y. slate. We don’t need to see the POST Act reports to know that the NYPD can’t be trusted with biased and dangerous technologies like facial recognition, drones, and so-called “geofence warrants,” which can track everyone in an entire city.

The POST Act will be a turning point in the surveillance debate, giving New Yorkers the data to finally dismantle the NYPD’s surveillance narrative. But we can’t wait for the POST Act data to go further. Please join us in calling on New York State to protect our privacy. Tell them to enact the Privacy N.Y. slate.
