What's your 2021 resolution?

*|MC:SUBJECT|*

2020 was no typical year – and our resolutions for 2021 shouldn’t be either. We need real and meaningful change in the next twelve months, not a return to the status quo. That’s why we’re excited to share S.T.O.P.’s New Year’s resolutions – our ambitious plans for New York to become a leader in privacy protection in 2021.

  • Facial recognition: After months of work by S.T.O.P. and other advocates, Governor Cuomo signed a landmark bill banning facial recognition in schools statewide. Next year, we will fight for this ban to go further, including all government and law enforcement use of this biased and broken spy tool.

  • Reverse search warrants: In 2020 we saw the first reports of geofence and keyword warrants, which allow police to find anyone based on their location and search histories. We’re calling on Google to disclose the number of warrants it’s received, and will push for New York to be the first state to outlaw them entirely.

  • Health data privacy: Unfortunately, the pandemic doesn’t end when 2020 does. In the new year we will continue to pressure lawmakers to focus on public health priorities and not Big Tech’s empty promises. Vaccine passports and tracking apps don’t stop a virus; vaccines and contact tracing do.

This year, skip the usual resolutions and join the privacy fight instead. You can support S.T.O.P. in 2021 by donating today.
